Resistance to Change
Published on: 01 July 2016
Awareness is the First Step in Healing or Changing
When we have some pattern buried deeply within us, we must become aware of it in order to heal the condition… perhaps we begin to mention the condition, to complain about it or to see it in other people… like books or classes that we attract, these methods begin the awakening process – a new way to approach the dissolving of the problem.
What You Put Attention on Grows
We are culturally taught to fight the negative mentally – thinking if we do so, the positive will automatically come to us. It doesn’t work that way. How often have you expressed what you didn’t want? Such as…
- I don’t want to be stuck in this job.
- I don’t want to be lonely.
- I don’t want to be sick.
- I don’t want to be broke etc.
Did it ever bring you what you really wanted? Fighting the negative is a total waste of time!
Lessons Can Be Learned through Awareness
If you think of the hardest thing for you to do and how much you resist it, then you’re looking for your greatest lesson at the moment. Surrendering, giving up the resistance, and allowing yourself to learn what you need to learn, will make the next step easier. Don’t let the resistance stop you from making the changes.
What Are Your Nonverbal Clues that You Resist Change?
- Changing the subject
- Leaving the room
- Getting sick
- Being always late
- Creating and ending new relationships
- Flipping through magazines and newspapers
- Eating, drinking or smoking
We often assume things about others to justify our resistance or come up with excuses…
- It wouldn’t work anyway or do any good
- Only crazy or needy people seek help from therapists or coaches
- My family/husband/wife/partner won’t understand
- My case is different
- It will work itself out
We grow up with (limiting) beliefs that become our resistance like
- Nobody will ever love me
- All men/women are the same
- It’s too much work
- It’s too hard to change my bad habits
And we give power to others such as
- My family/partner or God doesn’t approve
- My doctor doesn’t want me to…
We have ideas about ourselves that we use as limitations or resistance to changing such as
- Too old
- Too fat
- Too weak
- Too smart
- Too dumb
- etc.
Resistance often expresses itself as delaying tactics or complete denial.
However, the biggest category of resistance is fear…
- I’m not ready yet
- I might fail
- They might reject me
- What would the neighbours/parents/friends think?
- It might cost me money
- I don’t want anybody to know that I have a problem
- etc.
Too often instead of working on our own changes, we decide which of our friends or family members needs to change. This, too, is resistance.
If you are ready to make a change and would like an easy-to-use yet very powerful tool to assist you to overcome your resistance including dissolving fear and changing your negative limiting beliefs to positive beliefs then take the first step here.
